Malcolm Macfie

I started running in the early 1980's while at university as part of my training regime for playing badminton and ran my first half marathon in 1986.

On leaving university, I moved to Fife for work and ran informally for a few years.

By the late 1990's, I was playing less badminton and running more. Around this time, I joined Fife AC and also started running with a council led group in Burntisland.

Over the next 10 years, I took part in a large number of events including several 10k's and half marathons, Edinburgh and Blackpool marathons and the Devil of the Highlands (4 times). I've also completed some duathlons, including the Corrieyairick Challenge.

By 2014, I had successfully completed the Jog Leader training and was assisting with training for the Burntisland group.

From 2018 to early 2025, I was a Jog Leader with Kirkcaldy Wizards, a JogScotland group based in Kirkcaldy.

In February of 2025 I relocated to Glasgow and in May, joined OTR Cumbernauld.

I've found the group to be completely friendly and supportive.

I have particularly been impressed by the number of committed, enthusiastic and knowledgeable Jog leaders within the group. This means that there is a large volume of experience available to everyone and that there will always be someone to answer your queries, be it about the basics of running, from 5k to ultramarathons, how to improve, or what's involved in competitive running.

During the summer of 2025 I was delighted to be asked to be a jog leader for the group and have been happy to support a group on Monday nights.

As I'm new back to the area, my knowledge of good running routes is currently zero, so generally on a Monday night I've focussed on tail running.

I'm looking forward to becoming familiar with local routes around Cumbernauld so I can ultimately lead some runs.
